Nederlands: Op dit schilderij van de Nederlandse kunstenaar Hendrik Chabot is een slapende man afgebeeld. Naast hem bevinden zich een melkbus met halfopen deksel en een stuk papier. Hij ligt tegen een hooiberg. Op de achtergrond zijn meer hooibergjes te zien. Het geheel is in gedekte kleuren geschilderd. Chabot schildert een duidelijk herkenbare voorstelling, maar hij geeft deze niet perspectivisch juist weer. Het hoofd van de boer is veel te klein geschilderd in verhouding tot zijn lichaam. Zijn hand is juist enorm groot. De verhouding van de lichaamsdelen onderling kan ook niet in overeenstemming zijn met de werkelijkheid. Chabot beeldt de man af alsof hij op een vlakke grond ligt. Maar hij schildert ook de halfronde contour van een hooiberg alsof we ertegenaan kijken in plaats van er bovenop. Hij zet het perspectief naar zijn hand. Zo kan hij vrijwel het hele beeldvlak vullen met de boer en toch wat van de omgeving laten zien. 'Chabot vervormt bewust de werkelijkheid ten behoeve van de uitdrukkingskracht van het schilderij. Dit is een kenmerk van het expressionisme. Ook Chabots manier van schilderen is expressionistisch. Hij gebruikt grove penselen en zet zijn verf op een rulle, bijna stroeve manier op het doek. 'Chabot is vooral geïnteresseerd in het alledaagse leven. Hij wil de waardigheid maar ook het zware lot van de eenvoudige boerenbevolking in beeld brengen. Zijn werk sluit hierin aan bij het Vlaams expressionisme. Hij schildert met sobere aardtinten en heeft dezelfde soort penseelvoering als Permeke en De Smet. Bij Permeke staan de elementaire krachten in de natuur centraal, en de invloed daarvan op de mens. Bij Chabot gaat het meer om het gevoelsleven van de mens. Hij legt het accent niet zozeer op de tragiek van het harde bestaan, maar juist op het mooie eraan. Zijn personen aanvaarden hun leven zoals het is. Chabot is door hen geroerd. Hij beeldt de boer af op het moment dat deze de dagelijkse zorgen van zich afzet en zich overgeeft aan de slaap. English: This painting by the Dutch artist Hendrik Chabot shows a man asleep. The whole scene is painted in muted colours. Chabot has painted a clearly identifiable scene, but he does not represent it with the correct perspective. The farmer’s head has been painted much too small in relation to his body, while his hand is enormously large. Nor is the relationship of the different parts of the body to each other is in accordance with reality. Chabot shows the man as though he is lying on a flat surface, but he has also painted the semi-circular outlines of the haystack as though we are looking at it from the front rather than from above. He uses perspective as he likes and consequently he can fill virtually the whole surface of the painting with the farmer and still show some of the surrounding area. Chabot deliberately distorts reality to increase the powerful expression of the painting, which is a characteristic of Expressionism. The way in which he paints is also expressionist. He uses coarse brushes and puts the paint down onto the canvas in a viscous, almost stiff way. Chabot was particularly interested in everyday life. He wanted to depict the dignity, as well as the heavy burden of the simple peasant. In this respect his work corresponds with Flemish Expressionism. He painted with austere earthy tones and used the same sort of brushwork as Permeke and De Smet. In Permeke’s work the elementary forces of nature have central place, as well as their influence on mankind. Chabot was more concerned with human feelings. His emphasis was not so much on the tragedy of a hard existence but actually on the beauty of existence. His characters accept their life as it is and Chabot was moved by them. He depicted the farmer at the moment that he puts aside his everyday cares and surrenders to sleep. |
